United States - Child protective system's fatal lapses

A recent investigation into the Los Angeles County child protective agency has exposed how an unskilled workforce and bureaucratic obstacles contributed to the preventable deaths of children. The brutal report, which reflects the worst fears of child advocates, needs to lead to changes in child protective agencies all over the state.

The 2011 "Recurring Systemic Issues Report," which was conducted by an independent counsel for the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, starts with the obvious: "In the nature of this work - child welfare and protection - there is 'zero tolerance' for

Authorities losing track of children in care

A performance audit has found ACT child protection authorities do not know the whereabouts of some of the children in their care.

A report released today by the ACT Auditor-General shows in November 2012 there were 573 children and young people in the care of authorities.

But the Community Services Directorate could not say where all of the children were, even during school hours, because information on the database had not been updated.

The report also found some children in foster care may never be visited by staff.

The audit shows the

Senior managers are so removed, they need a telescope to see the frontline

Senior managers are so removed, they need a telescope to see the frontline

Social workers often complain of a gulf between senior managers and frontline staff. But how important is this relationship to the running of services?

This management survey has been sponsored by Southend council but the editorial content is independent of the sponsor.

Senior managers are focused on targets and savings, not services. They are out of touch with frontline social work. They make restructuring decisions without properly consulting staff. These were some of the responses to Community Care’s survey on senior social work management.

Western Australia - Call to reform child protection process

An indigenous community member and a former head of Aboriginal Legal Services has called for a restructuring of the way the Department for Child Protection makes decisions about child placements.

Craig Somerville's recommendation for change follows claims, which the DCP has denied, that a foster carer had an Aboriginal baby taken from her care because she is non-indigenous.

"I'm concerned public servants alone decide on these decisions based on their interpretation of the system," he said.

Mr Somerville says a panel of child experts and community members should make decisions on placements

The baby abducted from France is still being kept from its parents

UK social workers have taken to snatching children abroad who have never even lived here.
One of many things to surprise me, as I have investigated the nightmarish underworld of our “child protection” system, has been the contemptuous way in which our social workers seem so willing to disobey the orders of judges.

DOCS’ crappy handy work in actually protecting children

DOCS’ crappy handy work in actually protecting children
Hello,
I’m writing this to hopefully show yet another example of DOCS’ crappy handy work in actually protecting children.

There are three kids all up, two girls (9yrs old and another who is almost 6 months) and one boy (5yrs old). The 9 yr olds father has been cut off from her due to allegations of sexual molestation, but here is the kicker, He couldn’t have done it, as he was in prison for something he now has an appeal against the conviction of and it was nothing to do with children and on top of that he and his mother were the ones to make these complaints in the first place but they are

Social worker killed herself after restructure caused workload to increase

A social worker committed suicide after her department was restructured and the pressures of her job reached unbearable levels, an inquest has heard.

Julie Dugdale was found hanged at her home in Clitheroe, Lancashire, where she lived with her husband and two children, in November last year.

Dugdale joined Lancashire council’s transitions service in 2010 as a newly qualified social worker. Last summer, her department was re-organised and she was required to reapply for her job as a co-ordinator.

She was successful, but the inquest last week at Blackburn Coroner’s Court heard that, after

Social workers no longer obliged to promote contact with birth parents

The government hopes new legislation will prevent birth parents from having unregulated contact with adopted and looked-after children. Social workers will no longer have a duty to promote contact between birth parents and children in care under new measures in the children and families bill, which was laid before parliament this week. Instead social workers will be obliged to ensure contact arrangements have “clear purpose”, as set out in the child’s care plan.

Foster Parenting Adventures - Resigning after my day on the witness stand

I have had quite the traumatic day.

I have been working for many years in the same county in my state.  I also live in this particular county.  Since the summer however, I picked up some per-diem work in a nearby county and have been since introduced to fostercare system dysfunction at a whole new level.
