Following last week's revelation that 70% of social workers worry about their newly qualified colleagues' lack of skills and experience, Joe Godden, professional officer for the British Association of Social Workers (BASW), looks at what still needs to be done to ensure students are prepared for their first job.  
 
Liquid Personnel's survey highlights a number of important issues, although it is important not to draw too many conclusions from a small sample.

Foster parents could be charged in toddler's hot car death

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Charges still are pending against a Jackson County couple after a toddler they were fostering was found dead in their vehicle.

James and Penny Hayfer were in the process of adopting the 3-year-old girl, Jackson County Chief Deputy Tony Boggs said.

The family was on their way back from church to their Wilding Road home in Silverton and the girl had fallen asleep in a car seat. Once home, the adults and children got out of the car and went inside.

"It kind of dawned on them later that she wasn't in the house," Boggs said.

Niki is very highly regarded within NCPA and has worked tirelessly for the last few years in helping and advising many hundreds of children, young people, and their parents in matters where there are issues of child abuse. A great many of those children and parents have expressed grateful appreciation for her efforts on their behalf.

Niki works in a voluntary capacity, as do all officers of NCPA, and she has made an outstanding contribution to our work, giving many hours of her own time in helping others.

Why it can get messy when the county takes someone’s children away

Edward and Kimberly Bogan where enraged when Berks County caseworkers and Spring Township police took their children from them in February.

Months later, they are still determined to get their children back, but they are tired and frustrated.

The couple says Berks County Children and Youth Services (BCCYS) should never have taken their children and is breaking the law.

Right now, about 580 children from Berks County are receiving out-of-home care — 470 in foster homes, and the rest in programs to help them cope with mental health or substance-abuse issues.
