Child abuse and neglect statistics

Note: There are no figures here of the amount of people actually proven in a court of law to have abused or neglected their children.

In this paper we present and discuss a snapshot of data describing child protection activity in Australia. The data presented is a summary of the data provided in Child Protection Australia 2011-2012 (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare [AIHW], 2013).

In Australia, state and territory governments have the statutory responsibility for protecting children from child abuse and neglect.

A voice for our most vulnerable

IT is the little girl's ninth birthday, and she is alone and crying. She has just endured a chaotic night of violence against her mother and little brother, but more confusion ensues when the police take her to her new emergency home.

THE number of Queensland children being removed from their homes has nearly doubled in eight years despite the number of proven abuse cases more than halving

on Tue, 06/26/2012 - 14:56

In 2003-04, 12,741 children were found by child protection workers to have been abused and 4413 were living in out-of-home care.

By last year the number of children who were the subject of substantiated abuse claims had dropped to 5941, but 8063 were in out-of-home care, representing an 82 per cent increase in removed children.

The alarming trend has vindicated concerns raised previously by child protection experts and advocates who warned the restructuring of Queensland's child protection regime, following the 2003 Crime and Misconduct
