Edmonton foster mother loses appeal of manslaughter conviction in boy's death

EDMONTON - The Alberta Court of Appeal has denied an Edmonton woman's challenge of her conviction in the death of her three-year-old foster child.

Lily Choy was sentenced in 2011 to six years in prison after she was found guilty of manslaughter for a second time.

Her first conviction was overturned by the Appeal Court because the trial judge gave the jury incorrect instructions.

In her most recent appeal, Choy's lawyer argued that the judge did not properly consider some of the testimony or findings from medical experts.

But the appeal judges concluded there was nothing wrong with the trial

Foster parent charged with having drugs worth €830 000

A MAN charged with possessing drugs worth almost €830,000 and who has previous convictions is a foster parent and has applied to foster another child, the High Court was told yesterday.

This follows reports last week and over the weekend that many foster families are not vetted by An Garda Síochána, and that children in certain areas are being placed with families with criminal convictions and a history of alcohol abuse.

A spokeswoman for the Health Service Executive said yesterday almost 88 per cent of foster parents have received clearance, including Garda vetting.
