With dozens of children sexually abused and at risk of sexual abuse in state care are we looking at a world that has gone soft on paedophillia? Are the paedophiles running the system? MOTHERS losing their new-born babies to Queensland child safety officials have fewer legal options as lawyers abandon the difficult work of child protection.

The $9 million child protection inquiry heard disturbing evidence on Wednesday morning of a lack of legal representation for people caught up in child protection issues.

A Mount Isa police officer has told the child protection inquiry that 95 per cent of young offenders in the north-west Queensland region are Indigenous males.

The commission of inquiry is holding two days of hearings to focus on child safety services in the area and consider the over-representation of Indigenous children in care.

Detective Senior Sergeant Kelly Harvey is the officer in charge of the Mount Isa child protection investigation unit.

She told the hearing there has been a dramatic change of focus for her unit from youth justice-related issues to child protection investigations.
