Inquest date of Coronial Inquest for Luke Borusiewicz

on Mon, 07/30/2012 - 12:43

This photo was taken on my last visit with my Lukey Pookey, he died in my arms two weeks later. You can see the scratches on his face. I rang and rang trying to get him out of that house, away from that foster carer who had already been complained about over 20 times from abuse to other children. Pat Anderson, manager Cairns North DoCS wouldn't even return my calls, she knew all of this.

The next day at a visit with his mother she found severe scratches on his penis which had to be looked at by a doctor they were so bad.

Pat Anderson is a serial child kidnapper and murderer endorsed by

Foster care in Maine: Will one dumb politician undo a decade of progress?

on Sat, 05/19/2012 - 14:19
UPDATE, MAY 16: Longtime Portland Press Heraldcolumnist Bill Nemitz has a great column today about a classic case of Maine's child welfare agency confusing poverty with neglect - a perfect illustration of why the state needs to do more, not less, to curb needless foster care.

I’ve written often about the transformation of child welfare in Maine, and how child safety improved after the state abandoned a take-the-child-and-run approach in favor of one which emphasizes safe, proven programs to keep families together.  I’ve written about how the death of Logan Marr, a little girl taken needlessly

Foster system leaves children isolated, vulnerable: report

on Sat, 05/19/2012 - 14:15

TORONTO Ontario’s child welfare system needs fundamental change to address the isolation, vulnerability and abandonment experienced by too many children in foster care and group homes, says a groundbreaking report written by youth about their plight.

The report, entitled My REAL Life Book, reflects six main themes of youth who addressed the hearings, including feelings of vulnerability, isolation and being “left out” of decision-making about their lives.

A tragic finish for a one-time happy ending

on Sat, 05/19/2012 - 14:12

We first met him in this space on the day before Thanksgiving way back in 1998 -- a shy, smiling 9-year-old refugee from Maine's foster-care circuit whose wildest dreams had just come true: He had a new mom and dad. He had a new home, a new neighborhood, a new school. He had, for the first time in his anything-but-easy young life, an anything-is-possible future.

Yet there stood Gordon Collins-Faunce, now 23, blank-faced Friday in York County Superior Court, charged with murdering his own infant son.

And there in the gallery sat Irv Faunce, Gordon's adoptive father, lost in the rubble of

International adoptions plummet globally

on Sat, 05/19/2012 - 14:08

HANOI, Vietnam — The number of international adoptions has plummeted to its lowest point in 15 years.

The steep decline is attributed largely to crackdowns against baby-selling, a sputtering world economy and efforts by countries to place more children with domestic families.

Adoptions expert Peter Selman at Britain's Newcastle University has compiled statistics showing that the number of orphans being adopted globally by foreign parents has dropped from a high of 45,000 in 2004 to an estimated 25,000 last year.

Some adoption advocates argue that the decrease also is linked to strict

High levels of burnout in child protection staff

on Sat, 05/19/2012 - 14:05

SOCIETY MUST prioritise the most important duties of child protection workers as they cannot do everything currently expected of them, the Health Service Executive’s national director of child and family services has warned.

Gordon Jeyes, speaking at the publication of a report on how best to retain social workers, said: “Social workers can’t do everything.”

The greatest proportion of social workers are in child and family protection.

Mr Jeyes said a debate was needed as to what were the most important functions of child protection services, as they moved from the HSE into the new Child and

Ontario urged to revamp foster care system

on Sat, 05/19/2012 - 14:01

Eric Hoskins, Ontario’s Minister of Children and Youth Services, says he intends to make changes to the province’s child welfare system after hearing from a group of young adults about their lives in foster care.

The report, written by current and former foster youth, was presented yesterday at Queen’s Park. Based on public hearings held in November on the foster care experience, it paints a picture of a system in which children feel vulnerable and isolated, either as part of a foster family or in group homes.
